Ufa Among Leading Cities with Population of Over One Million People

If compared to 11 cities of the Russian Federation with a population of over one million people (except Moscow and Saint-Petersburg), Ufa is not the largest among them but it is far ahead in terms of some socioeconomic indices.
Ufa is one of the leading cities as far as trade industry is concerned, possessing one of the highest value of retail turnover per capita. As to the volume of marketed services and investments on a per capita basis, the capital of Bashkortostan Republic is among the leaders as well. Ufa has one of the lowest crime rates.
Following the results of 2008, Ufa ranks 4th with Omsk, Perm and Chelyabinsk ahead as far as the volume of shipped products of production sector is concerned and it ranks 3rd regarding the volume of shipped products on a per capita basis. As for the index of industrial production, Ufa follows Rostov-on-Don and Kazan. According to the results of 2008, Ufa has registered the lowest share of unprofitable enterprises (8.7% to the total number of enterprises and organizations) if compared to the other large 11 cities of Russia.
As for commissioning of the total floor area of apartment buildings, Ufa ranks 6th , while in terms of volumes of investments into economy per capita it ranks 2nd among the Russian cities with a population of over 1 million people. If we compare the nominal average monthly wages, Ufa has ranked 4th in 2008.
As compared to other regional centers of the Volga federal district at the end of 2008, Ufa registered the lowest prices for beef, white sugar, wheat flour, bread and bakery products from 1 and 2nd grade wheat flour, cost of travel by the city electric transport, and relatively low prices for electric energy, water supply and sewerage, hot water supply and heating.
At the start of 2009 the resident population of Ufa, as initially estimated, has totaled 1 mln. 32.2 thousand people marking an increase of 3.5 thousand people as compared to the corresponding period of 2008. Ufa is the only city with a population of over one million people in Russia where natural increase was registered in 2008. The demographic situation in 2008 was characterized by a rise in births, reduction of mortality, and as a result, natural increase of population that has took place for the first time since 1993.
